Default fuel guage not reading

i was doing a spark plug replacement. after i reconnected the battery my fuel guage is showing 0. i just filled it prior to the tune up. it was reading but has left me stranded twice showing about 1/4 tank. I no longer let my guage get below 1/2 now. do i need to replace the sending unit or is it somthing simpler?

Make sure it's not the Display by disconnecting the signal wire at the Pump (purple). With it open, the Display should be Full; grounding the wire (which it seems to be now), Empty. If that doesn't change it, it's in the wiring or the Display. Otherwise, it's the Sender. Should be a Tech Tip about taking it out and cleaning up the Contacts. New is around $300 and it doesn't seem to matter if it's a Vette or a Yugo - they all cost about that much. Oh, and do a Google for "Bad Gas" in your locale. High sulphur content in fuels craps out the Sender and from time to time, Big Oil (Shell seems to be the worse) ponys over the Bucks to fix busted units.
