i'm having trouble starting my 95 lt1, not too sure what the problem is.
went out the other day and shut the engine off at my stop. when i went to start it up, everything lit up, but no crank, clicks, nothing. it was like my starter was ripped right of the car. while i waited for AAA to show up, half hour went by, i tried one last time to start it and it cranked right up. this same thing happened to me about 6 months ago and it was the cpu that fried and had to have it rebuilt. dont think its the alarm sys because i had it off since i had the car, and dont think its the cpu again, but i'm no expert. now i'm at the point that i'm scared to drive it because i'm afraid of getting stuck again. any help would be greatly appreciated
As always, check for trouble codes. Do you have the factory service manual? - it has the best step by step diagnostic tables for all systems on the car. The FSM is well worth buying.
I attached once long wire to starter solenoid terminal, rolled it and kept it there. When I had trouble starting I could touch battery by wire and start engine.
A place to start checking is: check the connections on the battery terminals and the connections on the starter. The coil tends to have heat issues....its another place to check.
Always check your FSM....check the trouble tree. Its the best place to start checking.
I would first suspect VATS. Unplug the clutch safety switch (gear selector switch at base of shifter if auto) and jump the socket and try a crank. See if there is 12v on the jumper in crank position. You can test your starter and starter solenoid by jumping 12v to the jumper, the starter should crank. If the starter is ok, then remove the kick panel above the drivers feet and find the two wires from above the steering column going to a 2 pin connector and unplug. Insert your ign key and measure the resistance across the 2 wires from the steering column. It should measure the same as the key pellet. If more than 4% error, you need a new ign lock which will have new contacts that make connection to the pellet. You can connect a resistor the same value as your pellet across the 2 pin socket (goes to the VATS circuit) and attempt a start. I believe on the 92, you cannot leave the resistor connected like older C4's, you must disconnect and reconnect the resistor for each start attempt.
