Default Optispark for the Umpteenth Time

My 92 has the no start problem. Fuel presure is fine. No Codes. That leaves me with the optispark. I have been looking on fleabay and at various auto part stores and find distributors running from $600 to $115.

This is not my prize car but fun to drive as it is set up for track. What optispark distributor would you guys or gals recommend at this point in a 92's life?

Thanks Folks.

Its not a job you want to do twice. Don't buy a $115.00 special and wonder why it breaks down again. Buy a MSD or an OEM. Make sure your problem IS your Opti and not another system ie. the coil.... etc.

If you go OEM do the vent modification on it.
Change your water pump at the same time.

Have you checked the ICM and coil???
Opti usually throws a code, ICM/coil do not.

I have purchased aftermarkets opti's twice in the last 3 years, the last time only because it came with a life time warranty but NEVER again.
I went oem from thepartsladi. WAY too much hassle to change not to mention getting stuck in traffic and tow fees. My original opti went over 100K. MSD is just too expensive for the same job.

Just my 2 cents

I don't follow the logic of your Opti diagnosis, you have fuel pressure and no codes so lack of spark seems like the right place to look, but there is also wiring and other components that could cause the problem. Why not follow the diagnostic procedure in the FSM to isolate the issue?

Did you check the coil and ICM??

They cause the same situation, not to mention a broken wire or a bare wire.

I agree. Take a deep breath and follow the FSM one step at a time. Will usually save you some money. The issue is not always what you assume it to be.

Thanks guys for the responses. The coil was checked. Will check the ICM based on the field manual which I do have.

first be sure that is your problem is from the opti, then if the car starts and stumble then the cam sensor inside the opti would still work but from the rusting it wouldint give the pcm acurate reading ,so try first before replacing new opti to open the cap of the old opti and clean it with contact cleaner then dry it ,make the sensor and it's reading disk clean but becarful dont bend the disk.then put new cap and rotor(you can clean old cap also and rotor and reinstall them again). and try the car see if it's work .
after that if it's useless then it's time for new opti.

good luck.

Just purchased a water pump and opti from partsladi. So far so good Did a bunch of research prior to pulling the trigger.

btw my opti went, without setting any codes. Car would start when cold, and run like crap when warm. A bad ICM will give you a no start.
The ICM is a lot cheaper, and easy to replace.
