The best scan tool is a laptop and a ALDL/serial or USB cable adapter. I am not sure if there is a scan tool that actually functions with the 870 ECM and it's slow 160 baud rate. Go to Moates.net....they will not list the 85 ECM specifically, but you need the ALDU1 adapter and cables and TunerproRT (software). I just went through what you are going through....so hit me up with Q's if you like.

It's an OBD-I system, ANY professional scan tool (with the proper early GM ALDL plug adapter) will work. Try looking on fleabay for a decent used Snap-On or Matco scanner - the older stuff goes Cheap.

I personally still have a Snap-On MT-2500. Obsolete now (no longer being updated for current vehicles) but until it dies (if it ever does) it works fine for the vehicles it Does cover.

I also use a laptop and either WinALDL or TunerPro (and I have TunerCat as well). The dedicated scan tool is handier, quicker and easier to connect and use. For diagnostic purposes it is a better choice.

Thanks for chiming in Ron, as I hate to give out the wrong info. In my searches for scanning the 85, some people were having problems with a particular (popular) scanner that would not work with the 870, and they even contacted the manufacturer, who said it would not work. I just can't remember which scanner it was. So my bad.
