I went for a ride today :) The service engine soon light came on  I just checked the ECM Fault code that was set. It is a 32 - EGR System fault. I know it is the exhaust gas reciculation system but the manual doesn't seem to be very clear on how to troubleshoot it or what could be wrong. Would the most likly cause be the EGR valve?
Hello Brian ,
Your in good company. Code 32 is a common problem. I also have a 1990 with the 32 code, it can be a pain in the neck. My 1989 had a code 32 and i fixed it by changing a $ 9.00 egt temp switch ( after i changed the egr valve of course). As far as the 1990 it does not have a egt temp switch so the first place to start is the vacume lines running to the egr valve and the solinoid. Now the problem starts, if you donot have any bad vacume lines do you change the egr valve? Since the 89 only had a bad temp switch causing the problem i am a little reluctant to go to the trouble again for nothing. For code 32 the ecm gets information from the coolant sensor, tps, manifold temp sensor & map sensor. Wensday my buddy is coming over with his scanner I will let you now if we find out somthing.
You can test the egr valve by removing the vaccum line going into it, manually press the bottom of the valve up, after it is all the way up put your finger on the vaccum fitting on the valve and let go of the diaphram, if it goes back down with your finger over the vac fitting it is bad, cannot hold vaccum. The other component that could be bad is the egr control solenoid bolted down to the water neck. Chances are it's the valve.
Thanks for the help. While I was at work today I got thinking that I might have a vacuum leak somewhere. My cruise control was also working erratically on Sunday as well.
