I just thought you guys would like to know about something my friend showed me while hooking up my new headers to the Y pipe. Instead of using the normal flat gasket or sometimes 2 gaskets together to connect the 2 pipes together, he put in a donut gasket, the one that has 2 beveled sides that they used in all cars years ago..I just went to Advance Auto with the pipe, got one that fit properly, put it in and tightened it down.It fit great and according to him it will last for years without leaking instead of the short time some last on these cars..These are made of some kind of fiber and I don't see how it could ever leak.....WW
I've been using those for some time and they do not leak. I always ask for the donut gasket for a '67 427 Corvette and they fit perfect.
There always seems to be someone on here asking how to seal the header to the Y pipe, some have even used multiple gaskets to try to seal them, so I just thought I would give those people an alternative to the flat gaskets.Whats real nice about using the donut is the pipes can be a little off center and it will still seal .Its little things like those gaskets leaking that can drive a person crazy....WW
The gasket might stick into the collector an eighth of an inch or so. Not enough to be called a restriction. The taper of the gasket fits into the collector and reducer and can't be seen.
