I've been down the road of investigating why my 4+3 does not go into overdrive, and it appears that a removal of the unit would be the next logical step. However, I do not want to put a lot of money into this unit. It would seem that replacement of this system would be worth considering, as long as we are going to the trouble to remove it in the first place. From what I have found on the Internet, replacement options include a 6-speed from Richmond Gear or a 5-speed from Tremec. I discovered in an older post that beginning in 1989, a 6-Speed Transmission built in Germany was installed. (good info on that here: (http://www.web-cars.com/corvette/1989.php). I wonder how long that unit was used, if it worked well, and if it can be installed in a 1988? SInce this is a huge undertaking, I want to research as much as possible, and appreciate the feedback from this group!
How much is your car worth if the transmission was working properly?
I ask that because going to one of the options that you mention may cost as much as or close to what your car is worth. If you intend to keep the car along time, then maybe the investment is one that will benefit you in the long run. Those three options, the Richmond, the Tremac or the ZF 6speed are all about $3k, you may be able to do the ZF for less if you gather parts diligently. The cheapest option is to get a used 4+3 or to put a T-5 in. All of these options have advantages and disadvantages, but be careful about putting $2-4K into a $5k car.

Thanks for the feedback. Do you know if the ZF transmission from 89+ will fit into the '88?

I know that it is possible to put a ZF transmission in an earlier car. As far as which transmissions fit with which flywheels, throwout bearings, clutch assemblies, starters, etc, I do not know the ins and outs of the swap. If you do an archive search however you will find lots of information as this swap has been done many times.
