Ive had this problem ever since I got the car running last year. At low speeds my engine temp is between 195-210. But at freeway speeds it cools down all the way to 160-170. I do have a 195 t-stat in it. And everything was replaced with the engine build except for the radiator. It's an 89 l98.
well my average mpg started going up on my display so thats one thing i wanted fix. But now when I got on the freeway the motor was pinging like hell at WOT at running temp. I run 91 octane, and yes my motor has flat top pistons.
Check the ign. timing, follow the emissions label. Make sure the egr system is working right. You might have have carbon build up on the piston tops. Does the engine use any oil? Oil that gets into the combustion chamber greatly reduces the fuels octane. Did you get all the air out of the cooling system?(that can be a problem sometimes)
The engine was rebuilt last year it might have around 3000 miles on it. I also already replaced the egr last year because it wasn't working. The engine uses no oil. I reset the timing, base idle, and tps. I got more power and milelage out of it but still pinging. I will have to check the cooling system though. Its running at around 203 F. Thats as far as it will cool down after new T-stat, even at high speeds. Fan comes on around 209F. It cutsoff around 202F 203F.
Well I burped the cooling system there was some air in it. It cools down all the way to 201f. But what I don't get is should'nt cool down all the way to 195. ? Unless there is more air in the system and my temp sensor is getting a bad reading. Or my temp sensor is bad. I did drive it and I did'nt notice any pinging. I did clean between the radiator and condensor yesterday was'nt much there. Wish I had one of those laser thermometers that would help. I would think it would be better if the engine ran between 195f -200f.
