Buy a MSD cap and rotor, cap is vented.

Yes. Installed an MSD (7500 miles and no problems). The MSD has easy to follow instructions and has all the hadrware included to install. If you want a vented Opti, would highly recommend the MSD.

To run the Gen II OEM vented opti you'll need.

95/96 opti
95/96 opti wire harness
95/95 opti vaccuum harness
95 timing cover
95/96 camshaft or an aftermarket cam

HHow do you know whether you need to replace the whole optispark or weather you can get away with just a cap and rotor kit. I have read that usually when the opti fails its rarely the optical pickup which would lead me to believe I could get away with doing a cap and rotor rebuild on it.

I was wondering that because my project LT-1 is a b-body motor and I was wondering if I could use the opti off of that because it looks like its brand new

You do not need to do any of that, buy a 92-93 MSD cap and rotor, it is vented and run a vacuum line to the opti.

So you already have all the pieces for a conversion...........IMO the second generation OPTI from GM is better than the aftermarket...I had more than 150K on a factory opti on my Impala.....and the car ran great...
