my 94 idles fine, the gas gauge wont read, though it has really strong smelling gas fumes, when i turn the key on the fuel pump is really loud, you can put your hand on the gas cap you can feel it vibrate! when i drive it, i give it gas and it wants to quit on me! if i stop and turn it off for a min, start it back up it drives normal for about 2-3 miles and starts doing it again! dont know where to start! thanks for any help, joe
Start by checking the fuel pressure. Could be a bad pump or the filter is plugged up.
My sister-in-law's car did this once. I checked the fuel pressure at idle, after shut off, and at 3k RPM. It was fine fuel pressure and the car would rev just fine in park sitting still but under a load would bog down. It would slowly climb to highway speed and cruise there ok. But it had no off the line performance. I took it to my local transmission guru for, what was so so obvious to me, a quote on rebuilding the trans. The guy test drove the car with me driving and before we'd gone very far at all he said, "you don't need a new transmission just a new fuel filter." He was spot on.
Moral to the story: fuel pressure can be ok while sitting but fuel flow rate and pressure can be way off on the road. Test the fuel pressure by taping a gauge to the outside of the windshield and driving.
