Default question on converter

Need your input
how con I tell If my catalytic converters
on my 1989 vert with 92,000 miles need to be replaced
I get a bad burning smell
and it idles very rough
last nite it did not want to idle at all
in fact stalled when I was turning a corner

Realistically there isn't a good way to check them without looking inside. I would just cut them off and either delete or replace them. I had a shop cut mine off and weld in sleeves. Cost me $60. I wouldn't want to do it for that. You can have a shop check your exhaust output but that may not tell you for sure what is causing any blockage.

Normally if the converters are plugging up, you'll loose power at higher RPM. They would have to be really bad to affect the idle. If you think they are plugged, remove the O2 sensor, this creates a big exhaust leak ahead of the cat con, and see if it runs any better.
