I need a custom burned chip for my 87 Iroc, because the stock chip can't handle the 383 stroker with the Super Ram, and how much should I expect to pay for one. Thanks for any replies, Kevin.
I paid $750.00
The tuner had my car for a week. Passenger seat+footwell was completely covered in datalogging equipment etc. We waited for some good weather days, and he would drive it around logging events. I couldn't get tuning like that thru the mail. It was well worth it for me. I HAD to, what with so many mods I did at the same time.
I paid $500 for mine from Formato. They went through 6 chips to get it dialed in right. They sent the chip, I ran the Diacomm through identical conditions (cold start idle, warm start idle, part throttle cruise, and full-throttle accelleration through the gears) and captured the data. Then I sent it (the data) back and Eileen would burn a new chip then send it to me. I would send back the old one, and we exchanged chips like that until it was right.
That $500 also pays for any future changes I may need due to engine modifications I may make.
I concur with Joe90... Formato does a great job on their chips and will make your ride perform the best it can... My set-up has never been so repeatable on the 1/4 since putting the Formato chip in.
Or you can spend $200 and do it yourself. It will take longer because I'm assuming that currently you don't know what you're doing, but to get started you can copy a BIN from somebody with a similar setup, and then just tweak from there. This is also a huge benefit because you'll be able to do it yourself in the future when you do more mods.
On thirdgen.org, there's a PROM-Burning board that has a wealth of information. There's also a DIY article in the tech article section under the "Electrical" heading.
