I have an '85 vette with the 4+3 manual transmission, I would like to swap in a 5-speed. has anyone out there done this or know of somebody who has successfully done it? Any info would help. thank you Greg
I'm on a budget, a very tight budget, and I can get a 5-speed out of a 5.7 tpi iroc for free off of a friend, so I'm trying to work with it. thanks:)
5.7 f-bodies never came with a 5-speed. It's either not stock, or he's got a 305. But either way, a T5 won't last long behind a strong 350. It's a very weak transmission. If it's a non world-class unit (pre 88), then it's a REAL weak trans.
very strong, OD 5th and it has the vette tail shaft. The t-5's weakest part is 5th, be careful with it and it will last a while, i've seen them in 2nd gen fbodies behind 350-400hp motors.
the unit that is available to me is from a '89 z-28, it's a t-5, and it's FREE so I want to make it work. does anyone know about the shifter location and what about the driveshaft beam, how can I make this work?
There is a local guy here in VA that has an 84 with a T-5 from an IROC in it. His car was an auto before and he got a hurst short throw shifter for it. Just reused the auto console plate and the shift patteren was tight enough to fit in that slot. He pulled the leather boot up to the shift **** and you can't even tell its in there.
As for the C beam support brace he fabricated a bracket to bolt on to the tail shaft and rigged it up. He loves it, I have seen the car and it looks nice. So it can be done. He was in the same boat, wanted a stick on a budget.
