Default Tuning noob needs help

Hi all, I need to get into learning this stuff, but I'm working at a pretty steep disadvantage because I don't know anything about computers. I mean really..............I don't know a baud from a bit & I have to google everything that most people consider basic. The biggest problem I'm having I think is I don't have a foundation of knowledge to build on when I do my searches to learn. It seems like everything I read about tuning & datalogging is written making the assumption people know the fundamentals. All this being said, I was finally able to get my laptop connected to my car & actually do a datalog this past weekend (I think) Boy, that was an adventure!

I'm using TunerproRT & this cable: http://www.obd2allinone.com/sc/toplevel.asp?cat=2; and after a bunch of failures I finally got the thing connected! My first questions are what's an ARAP bin & a 6E.XDF file & why do I need to use them? Isn't the info contained on my chip called a BIN too? Are they the same things? I got the program connected & running at first using an APYP bin, but I think the ARAP is the one for me because I have an auto tranny; but don't ask me why..........:o Could I screw things up because I first hit record with the AYAP?

The car is an 87 A4 w/ a highly modified 421CID Thanks!

Tuner Pro will work with more than one ECM so you need to correct operating files ( definitions ) for what ever ECM you are using ; in your case the '165 ECM which uses 6E or 32B

The bin is the file containing the information relating to the tune itself .The ARAP bin is supplied with TunerPro because that is the one most commonly used .You can read your own bin or download others from the internet

There are differences in the tunes ( bins ) that accommodate the differences between auto and stick cars as well as other tweaks to suit different rearend ratios etc
If you look here you will see the factory used many different ones for '89 Vettes ($6E )
http://www.chevythunder.com/prom_bcc_1989.htm

Straight up the auto bin will be set up to operate the TCC where as the stick one won't.
There may be spark / fueling differences but nothing that is going to blow your engine up.

ARAP is a good bin if you need to eliminate the cold start injector. Its a MAF bin. Its pretty forgiving. 90, 91 cars use a MAP, speed density bin with a 730 ECM. I think thats the ECM number, anyway.

check wwwthirdgen.org/techboard. Lots of good info there. I started tuning a couple of years ago. I've kept a binder on what I've done and what I've downloaded from that site.

Wow, that's by far the best thing I've read to date..........step by step & very basic; thanks very much! I think I must've read everything on our forum & on thirdgen, but a lot of it might as well be greek because I just don't understand the terms used. The screenshots on this piece really helped! Thanks again!

Jack, I'll call you later today
