I am trying to decide on diagnostic scanners and troubleshooting tools for vettes from 81-98, mainly 86-92 OBD1. Any recommendations?
I purchased a 92 that failed smog because high HC. I have an 89 that stumbles on acceleration. If it had a carb. I would check the accelerator pump. The injectors tested 16 ohms and fuel pressure steady at 38#. Any help or information is always appreciated.
Thanks, Bill
You can use a small wire and jump a couple of pins in the connector and then turn the key to "run" (don't start) and the CEL will start flashing, giving you a code to use to start troubleshooting. Count the flashes, double digits are first number, pause, second number, i.e. Flash-Flash-Flash, pause Flash-Flash is 32. Each repeats 3 times and then goes to the next (if multiple codes are stored), at the end it starts over until the jumper is pulled or the key turned off.
Problem is I don't remember wich pins to jump right off hand, but any haynes/chiltons book will tell you (if the user manual doesn't). Very helpful to have the FSM as well to really chase the TS flowchart.
Thanks for the reply. You are dead on about the FSM, I hunt for them as soon as I buy a different car. I want something that will go beyond the code read. There seems like a lot of choices and I want to narrow the search.
Thanks again
I'm a fan of datamaster for my 88. It uses a USB cable with a ALDL connector attached to my laptop. There is a ton of data available and you'll want the shop manual to help determine what is normal. There are lots of posts about datamaster and where to get the cables.
