I was cleaning the motor on my 1984 with an automatic Thursday and I found the hose from the PCV valve loose from the valve cover and I plugged it back in. I don't think the car is as fast though maybe it is running smoother, is this possible?
It wouldn't surprise me that the extra airflow from the open hose helped power, but not having the crankcase ventilation could also hurt the idle quality.
Wow I really am a newbie! As I said I was trying to clean my motor and I found this hose loose from my valve cover and plugged it back in. I thought it was the pcv valve and the car ran bad and I ordered another one from the dealer and when it came I saw it wouldn't fit and that there is no valve there on the end of the hose. It's on the passenger side of the car close to the distributor and goes up to the air filter cover? Anyway I went to some mechanics I know and talked to them about working on the car. They said they had lots of Crossfire experience and that it wouldn't be a problem. You can't hardly tell there is anything wrong in town, but on the highway or full throttle it won't go faster than 70 and doesn't even have enough power to shift out of second gear! With or without that hose plugged in. Any guesses? Also I will probably be getting a tune-up and wonder what I should do to a car that has been really neglected and what spark plug you would recommend for a Crossfire.
If the car hasn't been treated well, I'd say get a hold of a factory service manual and use it to verify that everything is "correct". Meaning, all the hoses go to the right places, ignition timing is set correctly - things like that. Then move on to fuel pressure to make sure it's right. Also balance the throttle bodies - make sure they open at the same rate. You may also want to make sure that the advance mechanism (under the rotor in the distributor) is lubed and moves freely.
If none of that makes any difference, I'd run a compression test on it just to make sure you don't have a dead/dying cylinder.
That hose is the breather hose that goes from the passenger side valve cover into the air cleaner assembly. It shouldn't affect performance at all. It does provide filtered air into the crankase as the pcv draws air out of the crankase.
