This summer I am thinking of doing some garage work with my dad and thought headers would be a nice project. I've already got Flowmaster catbacks on and thought some headers would be a nice addition. My question is which ones should I get?
If emissions are not a concern, get the hooker 2151's. They sound downright mean with the flowmasters, check the sig. BTW, I don't have the flowmaster catback, rather 2 flowmaster 40 series mufflers with stock tips installed. Oh, it's got an x-pipe too.
The headers listed for the LT1 are shorties, which are more or less useless. If you want long tubes you have to go with the 2151's or the 2149's. They are long tubs for the L98. The bolt up just fine, you just have to have some exhaust work done to have them bolt to your cat-back. They actually fit and work great.
As for the x-pipe, it's pretty cool. I don't know the exact firing order on the motor, but it does not alternate sides of the motor every time. For example 5 and 7 fire right after each other, this causes an unbalanced pressure. Essentially you've just had 2 cylinders fire on the driver's side, while you have a 2 cylinder gap on the passenger side, this creates some strange backpressure differences. An H or X pipe simply ties the two exhaust pipes together so that the backpressure is equalized across the motor. The equal backpressure will make more power, usually to the tune of a few more pounds of torque. It's not much, but we all know that every little bit helps.
