Default Water pump leak

I found a leak on my 94 this weekend at a show 215 miles from home. Until the car cooled down, i could not find only a line across hood (spray from belt) Once the car heated up the leak stopped and i proceded to drive home. After a long 3.5 hours and the car running at 180-190, we are safe at home. The leak is dripping on my pully/belt. To make a long story short, money is very tight at the present time and i would like to get my vette running as soon as possible. The opti seems fine and after a lot of research on wp's electric and mech, for money reasons i may just replace the wp with a mech one and do a good clean out. Any comments would be helpful, hate to do it half ***, but with the money crunch and the opti working and only 46k on it i think this should be fine?

The story sounds familiar. Cost just over $200.00 from a local Chevy dealership.....installed by me and running like a champ.

When my wp went, I replaced it with a new one from the dealer along with a new opti, new wires, new hoses and a new belt, spent $800 in parts. While your best bet is a new opti, there is someone that sells rebuilt ones and rebuild kits on ebay that several people have reported good luck with.

When you are changing the waterpump, it is tempting to say "while I am doing this" and replace a lot more parts. The truth is, changing the wp on an LT1 car by itself, isn't that big of a deal, so if you end up doing the opti later, hence doing the wp over again, it isn't that much extra work.

Starting to tear it down, going to check condition of opti and for any oil leaks at water pump gear. If everthing checks out good may opt for the HD electric pump, no more weep hole and more hp's. Going to take it slow since this is not a every day driver, maybe win the lotto in the meantime!
