The injectors are new but while testing I discovered that the fuel pressure goes to 40 when the pump is running so I think the FPR is ok but then when it stops the pressure drops to 0.
so I am pretty sure the fuel pump needs replacing. I didnt go for a run with the gauge on it so I dont know if the pressure is dropping but I get no hesitation or other indication.
could a bad check valve cause my lean condition too?
any other comments? I also know my O2 sensor may be bad but I dont know if thats a PITA to replace or not yet.
yes there are multiple sensors. The code I pulled was for bank 2 sensor 2 lean although I dont remember the number.
this is the second sensor after the cats.

I don't know if that means the left bank is running lean, but I assume that's it. If that's it, changing the sensor won't make any difference. I would think there should be a code for a bad sensor if it is bad.
I dont know if there is a second sensor on bank 1 or not. I dont have my FSM here at work and am just going through a mental tshooting process. On cars I have previously owned there was only the one second sensor.
As I understand it the second sensor is only checking to see it the cat is working properly and doesnt really perform any other function. It compares the output of the cat to the input sensor. Someone more knowledgeable may correct me but I dont think the second sensor affects performance. The butt dyno seems to concur with that.
You need the code since there are about four different causes. Chances are it's a bad 02 sensor or the sensor harness.
96s have four sensors: two 02s and two that monitor 02 activity.
You may have to drop the exhaust in order to change the sensor. Trouble shooting beg\ins on page 6-420 in the Service Manual for the 96 Vette.
The fuel pressure should NOT immediately/nstantly drop to zero when the engine is shut off. If yours is doing that, and if there's no external gask leak, the cause could be somewhere in the engine compartment (injector, fuel pressure regulator) or in the gas tank/fuel pump itself.
External leaks could be the fuel filter, fuel line/hose, fuel line connections, etc.

I dont have any leaks I can find. I've been up and down the fuel lines. The injectors are new so I doubt they are the prob. So I will pull the vac line off the FPR to see if it has gas behind the diaphram. if not I think it could only be the check valve. Meh, its a 15 yo pump anyway and cheap and easy so I'll replace it asap.
the O2 sensor may be bad as well I suppose. just the one code leads me to think that is the case. If it was truely lean I think other codes would exist. which one is the bank2 side, drivers or passenger?
just to follow up,
since I knew I needed a fuel pump because the fuel pressure was not holding when the pump was off, I had new injectors and no other leaks I could see, I replaced it this weekend. Pressure holds good now @ 40 PSI with the pump off and pumps a strong 48 with it on.
So far I have not seen the lean code return. If it does I will report back in case someone else is searching this issue.
What I dont understand is if it was the pump causing the lean code, why didnt it throw more than just the one bank lean code? Meh, if it works, it works.
