Default HEI coil relacement

Mine is working just fine, allthough it is the stock one. Is it even worth replacing? any gains with aftermarket ones like MSD or Accell? Or just a waste of $70 ?

hmm, I guess I could switch to a 6AL, but don't know if it would be worth the effort or not.

The stock coil and distributor will work fine with a stock motor and even some minor mods. Go to a big cam, higher compression, headers, and an intake, you might want a coil with more output.

The 6AL won't really do anything to improve the stock system until you build some serious HP.

I had all the trick **** electrical on my 90 (high output coil, accel module, MSD 6AL). The msd failed and I had no idea what went wrong, I ended up going back to a stock set up since the coil was my last thing to eliminating everything and didn't notice a difference at all.

Stick with stock style HEI and just replace your coil, cap, rotor button, plugs and wires.

Well, I do have headers, breathless performance cold air, and run a 100 shot of nitrous at the track every weekend

I would replace it, on my 85, i would get intermittent misses and sometimes the car would just stall. They dont last forever

Coils degrade over time. If it is 10 years old or more, it can't hurt to replace it.

Nitrous.
Now I would probably at the very least use the MSD with N2O. A new coil too of course
