I've notice recently that my steering wheel is kinda loose. It's scary when you are driving at high speeds. Does anybody know how to fix this? Thanks for any input.
If the whole steering wheel is loose you will have to unhook the battery, let the car sit for about 30 minutes, remove the two screws that go into the back of the steering wheel to remove the airbag. There is a big nut that holds the steering wheel on that you can tighten. How did it get loose?
Chevey has a reapir kit for it. My 1992 had the same problem. Tilt wheel? I could pull up and down on it and it would move a bit, right where the tilt part is hocked to the dash. The 1992 has two different kits for it. We just used the one that fit.
I use to have part #'s for it. I am dropping the vette off in a while to have a new radiator, condenser & carpets put in. I will ask the shop if they still have the #'s and post them here when I get back. :flag
I didn't mean the whole steering wheel is loose. What I meant was that there is some play in the steering. It's almost too easy to steer the car. It wasn't like this before. This gradually happened.
Sounds like your rack may be going out. The steeringwheel may feel easier to turn but are your wheels actually turning properly? What does the steering fluid look like?
kyvette90, I think you might be right. It's easier to steer but the wheels do not seem to be responding instantly. Haven't check the steering fluid. If this is it, do you know how much it would cost to replace a steering rack. Thanks.
I have a 93 with loose tilt mechanism and would greatly appreciate the part # and any tips on how to fix.
Thanks! :flag
Me to!! I took mine to the local dealer, paid $450.00 to fix, flush transmission, and fix horn. Oh well, I guess they flushed the transmission. None of the other stuff got done.

I am going back this AM to take pic's of the old radiator and the new one installed. When I dropped it off last night they were kind of busy.
Wait a minute, I have a phone, I can call them. Darrr.. Too early in the morning..
Ok, here are the part #'s for a 1992:
26059178 = a .001 size bigger pins + springs.
26002678 = a .002 size bigger pins + springs.
Cost is about $30. There might be a different kit for each year vette? Try and call Corvette Central and ask for the pin and spring Kit for the "tilt wheel coupler upgrade" fix from Chevey. Cost to disassemble/reassemble and fix the problem. It calls for 2 1/2 hours flat rate.
I hope this helps. Be real careful if you have a Air bag. They have been known to go off even when they are disconnected and removed. I put mine outside, upside down when I was working on the wheel.
