Default Reflashable chips for a 1990?

I have a 1990 that I am about to install my new engine in. It's basically all stock except for the addition of a ZZ9 cam. I have been messing around PICs for about 3 years now, making my own circuit boards with buttons, sensors and lights that use a PIC to control the input/outputs.

What is the absolute cheapest way to get started with reading/writing my own EPROMs? I don't know anything about it yet, just what I have read in the stickies and what I have read browsing the forums and searching on google. Is there some kind of upgrade for the 1990 ECU that would use a flashable EPROM instead of one that requires erasing? How about some kind of interface board that would allow me to make changes on the fly?

If you want to go the cheaper chip reprogramming route you can use a 27SF512 chip in the same memcal adapter as mentioned in link above with this unit to program them

Depends what you want to do.
If you believe you only need some minor changes and that will be it then get the burner.(cheaper )
If you know you are going to be playing around with the tune / doing future mods that will require extra tuning get the emulator (Ostrich )
As noted ;
as simple as hooking up the laptop, making changes and driving off.
The burner requires you to open up ECM , remove chip / erase / reprogram / reinstall /test ;
didn't get it right / take it out and do it all again over and over until you are happy

I have a ribbon cable that lets my chip mount to the dash. ECM is in its home. Before that I drove for 3 months withe the ECM hanging down on the floor. Not as good as the Ostrich, but not bad.
