Driver side "clunk" (Rear wheel)
Last year my '86 developed a clunk from the back left tire when I put it in gear and sometimes when I came to a stop. I had the u-joints replaced and while they were a little worn, they didn't end up being the problem as the clunk was still there. For what its worth, the clunk is more of a high pitched clunk, almost tinny. Could this mean rear end trouble? Otherwise the car runs strong with no noises or vibrations at high speeds. The early C4's are notorious for having this noise. I read where you could spray motorcycle chain oil in the vent holes of the driveshaft and the halfshafts to eliminate it. So far I'm enduring the noise since I know that my u joints are ok.

Have you checked your braking system?
Today I had the local Chevy dealer check out a noise from my left rear that sounded like a U-joint and it was a weak spring on one of the pads.

I had the same noise (high pitch like something metal was about to break) coming from my rear when going from a forward to a reverse gear. Changed u-joints twice, but that didn't help. Then when I replaced the whole suspension, front and rear, ball joints, tie rods, control arm bushings, wheel bearings e.t.c. it went away. So I'm guessing rear wheel bearings. Put the car on a lift and have the suspension checked over really good. You might find a bad component that could be the cause. If your garage ha a whel lift the mechanic could sit in the car while it's up and shift from reverse to forward to isolate the noise. Good luck.
