Is this one of those preconfigured chips that fall into the "waste of money" category?
No
PCM for less and other "proper" tuners will do a custom chip to suit your engine's specs.
Obviously at the low end of engine mods they will already have a file on the shelf that will be near perfect given they have done so many tunes.
If on the other hand you have a heavily modified engine they will work with you to get tune right. In most cases they send you a ballpark tune based on your combo; you run it and datalog, send them the datalog so they can see what is happening and then they can fine tune it
This may be the way forward for newbs like me to at least get started. For some reason Australia isn't in their drop down list of countries they service!
I thought I sent you a pm a few days ago. Did you not get it?
Just checked , you went to wrong place ,you sent "visitor message".

I have just bit the bullet and ordered the APU1 and the GP1 from Moates.
APU1: includes aldl , usb 28 pin emulation cable, Tunerpro RT
GP1: two 27SF512 chips, an 'S2' ZIF socket, and a G1 adapter
I think this is what I need to get started. Thanks for the help to get me this far. Get my car back today with the rebuilt tranny so I can check out the ecm.
Hey Guys - order the Ostrich as well so U can do real time tuning. I've worked with a lot of customers this way - quick - quick - quick !!!!!!!!! LOL
I do mostly the blower tunes but no reason not to do N/A especially with my L98 MAF sensor.

Oh! I thought the APU1 was going to do that for me.

How does one install one of these custom chips into the ecm? Do people desolder the facory chip and solder in the new one? Or do they typically use a G1 adaptor?
