Default aftermarket HEI coils

I'm wondering if anyone is using any of the aftermarket cap-mounted HEI coils like Accel, MSD etc., and if so, any preferences or problems?

I used an Accel on my 85 for years, with an Accel HEI module, worked great,,,, the cap is a snug fit against the rubber molding right behind it though.

I have the Accel coil and cap and they do fit tight, I used a dremel tool to grind away the back of the cap on an angle so it wouldn't hit the hood. This coil and cover were on the car when I got it, I wouldn't have purchased this setup myself..If your getting the new cap and coil just for more spark, its not necessary until your into at least the 375-400 hp range. The stock coil will handle most cars out there..WW

It fit my '84 fine. But on my '88 I just used this accel:

It's out of sight and out of mind. Works fine for many years without a problem.

The stock coil puts out plenty of spark, you don't need an aftermarket coil. Besides, for the same size coil you cannot get more spark energy, but the aftermarket guys can get more of your money!

I have been running the HyperTech coil/cap/rotor on the '88 for 10yrs with good results; it fires well all the way up to the 5,800 rpm shift points.

actually, it is possible to play with wire size and number of turns of wire to get higher coil output in the same size package as oem...most such endeavors result in reduced coil longevity, however (i have in fact sent three of 'most popular brand' aftermkt HEI coils to recycling as they were non-fuctional, only one oem HEI coil dead EVER)

It is also a good idea to use a higher capacity module as the performance coils take more amperage.

I have used an Accel high output coil on my 86 L98 since 2001 and it has workef fine with no problems or excessive stereo system noise. It fits well under the OEM coil cover.

i agree. Here's what I learned some years ago:

JACOBS Electronics makes and sells an entire line of high-end ignition products for our engines. The owner, who has a PhD on the subject, published a book on the automotive ignition system. Naturally I had to buy it to see what's what. (Where it now is anyone's guess, LOL.)

In it he explains what works, what doesn't and why. He even wrote about the plug wire resistance game the wire companies play. You know, "My plug wires have less resistance than yours so mine are better". Eye candy!

He went on to write that the GM coils are right at the top of the list of the best coils you can buy, even compared to his - Now That's Saying Something When You Think About It.

He even listed the specific GM part numbers of the coils he's tested and on which he based his conclusions. Of course, I can't recall the actual #s, but they may be listed on the Jacob's site.

Just passing this along for what it's worth. Hope it helps.

Jake

I had one on my old Trans AM many years ago.

But what I can remember I did not notice and change the car was stock 1982 Recaro TA with the little 305 pushing around

I though it was a waste of money at the time.

I put on an Accel HEI coil and cap on an old Buick around 1992 and put over a 100,000 miles on it before I parked it. It was still running okay at the end. For my vette build I went with a DUI distributer.

I've been running the stock Delco system in my '84 turbo 355 for years. There's enough oomph in the stock system for most reasonable applications.
