Default 96 LT4 newb help

I have a stock 96 CE LT4, and would like to get into tuning the ECM/PCM. I looked through the FAQ, but did not see much on the 1996. What is the preferred method for tuning a 96? I have an OBDI LT1 PCM from an F-body I can use, if possible, rather than flashing a 1995 bin onto my stock PCM.

I have no software, cables, or anything but a laptop and a car, with a spare PCM. I appreciate your expert advice in advance.

Many do the OBD2 to OBD1 swap on 96 cars because the tuning software is cheaper and OBD1 easier to tune
Have to find links but was reading last week IIRC only requires one wire swap at PCM and use of a OBD1 knock sensor using the 96 harness. OBD1 doesn't use the crank sensor 96 has

The off the shelf converted LT1 PCM's you pay $200+ for have a resistor installed so they can use either tune

All you need to use the OBD1 computer is the OBD1 knock sensors. No wiring changes.

The reason people convert to OBD1 is cost of software, not "easier to use".

Cost aside, it seems that far more people prefer the OBD2 software to the OBD1.

A friend of mine mentioned that he thought you had more control over the OBDI PCM, and that parts of the OBDII are inaccessible. However, he doesn't have any experience with OBDII. Is there any truth to that?

Also, what software does OBDII require? Any of it free, or maybe there is an SDK out there..

AFAIK, the two options are LT1edit and Jet Tuner.
