I bought the trw upper units and they came with essentially 4 parts. Gasket, boot, backing plate with lip, the ball joint itself, but no instructions. I have rationalized like 3 different ways to bolt these things in. Does the gasket go on the bottom side or top? When I put the boot on and then try to bolt it in, the boot lip wants to squeeze in between the mounting surface. Anyone have the instructions or know?
1) Drop the baljoint in the properly prepped hole in the a-arm.
2) Slide rubber boot up the shaft from the bottom.
3) Slide retaining ring up (from the bottom) to sandwich the boot between the bottom of the a-arm, and the top of the ring.
4) Install bolts, snug evenly and torque to specs listed in your Factory Service manual.
5) Install zerk fitting.
6) Pump in grease until boot begins to bulge slightly.
7) Repeat for other side.
8) Drive car approx 50 miles, and regrease per step #6.
Thanks man! Does the lip on the retaining ring go in or out? The boot just didn't seem to want to slide on the ball joint when you put the ball joint in and THEN slide the boot on.

Lip should point down so it doesn't cut the boot.
It is supposed to fit tight.
Get some tap water as hot as you can in a bowl, and soak the boot in it for a few minutes.
Pull it out of the water, shake the water off quickly, and slide it up into position.
A little smear of vaseline on the balljoint will help the boot slide on.
Last question! Swear . What about the gasket? Under ball joint flange or under the retainer?
I missed that part. Gasket goes between the ball joint, and the top of the upper a-arm.
If the gasket is ugly, you can trim it, or use clear silicone as a substitute.
