87 manual. I have the Aux cooling fan in front of rad. My car has seen some low curbs (before I bought it) and had some damage under it. When i bought it I was under the engine but didnt look up front. Rcently i was under the car doing the O2 sensor and noticed it was bit bunged up in front (not noticable from top). My aux fan is just laying on radiator, not attached in any way. Some quick looking and I dint even see a way for it to attach. Its possilbe some part on the fronty where replaced froma car without the Aux fan so it has no way to connect. When i got car some bolts where missing ont he front rad shroud.
Several question: Can i unhook this from the relay and not have codes?
So far even in 98 degrees It hasnt come on (or my fins on front of rad would look like crap) My temps stay at 220ish max (even when ideling in heat). So I'm fine without it if it wont cuase problems.
except its just sitting leaning against my radiator. it is wired in correctly. i would have unplugged it to check if it threw a code but its in a very fun spot to unplug (for a guy with a very bad back, leaning over this thing working on it is a bit tough).

First of all I don't think there is a code related to aux fan operation. The first thing I would do is disconnect the wire going to the aux fan switch/sender. It is between plugs 1 and 3 on the drivers side head.
If you want to replace the fan it sounds like you may have to buy the complete fan unit or go to a junk yard for parts. They whole new unit with motor is not all that much maybe $150 IIRC.
If you want to see what the unit looks like do some Google searches, pictures are out there on the auto parts sites.
Some where I read it is sometimes called an "Overheat Prevent Fan". Comes on at 238 degrees if I remember correctly. More importantly it comes on when the A/C is turned on. ECM turns it on.

No, the aux fan is controlled by a thermistor in the head not the ECM. Depending on the year it comes on around 236*. Not sure the exact temp on a 1987.

I would rather mount it correctly. If anybody can tell me how it mounts. Any help would , I would be greatfull.
Your auxiliary fan does not come on until your engine temp reaches 235 degrees. Under most operating conditions it does not come on very often, if at all. My aux fan only comes on when I am climbing hard up steep mountain roads in the summer or at the track.
Your aux fan should have three mounting legs similar to the attached photo (click to enlarge). The aux fan mounts onto the upper and lower radiator baffles. See attached diagram.

Keep em straight. I can't do this alone. Misinformation is rampant.
I am still waiting to hear a quote from an an FSM for the ON temp.
so the pusher fan should come on with the a/c too? only my puller fan comes on with a/c or at 226,never been in the 230's so my pusher fan may not even work
I threw that piece of junk away on my 89. Replaced it with a 14" Black max. It connects with plastic tabs through the radiator. Cut the wires on the old one and spliced the new one in. About 30 minutes total.
Well thanks for all the info! Its all there I just didnt see a way to attach it, but there must be more to it then I'm seeing. It looks just like all the pictures, doesnt look like anything is missing. But it sure appears the opening it would bolt to is alot bigger then it. guess i will crawl down again today and see waht i can do. good to hear its most likley not going to throw a code. I'm going to try and fix correctly before I remove.
thanks Again.
There you go; that's it exactly. Shouldn't be any questions now.
MANY MANY thanks! I think my problem was I was thinking it mounted at the rad (its on the slope). When laying on ground and looking at full witdth of rad it looked really small, but as I see it mounts to the tunnel going to the rad, not at top and bottom of the actual rad. Yes that picture really helped.. Looks pretty simple to, 3 bolts (that I'm sure are missing) is it. it wil be fixed tonight (pending weather) or removed.
cant say thanks enough, I dont know how one could have put that in words (that i would have understood).
getting so much done now on it.. and only half the summer is gone.. i might be close to where i want to be by end of it
Oh one last question, any way to test if its working?
