I've picked out a BEAUTIFUL 84 to buy but it's having a "no start" issue.
The seller put a new battery in it. When you turn the key nothing happens, no click, headlights don't dim, nothing.
I think there are only a few things that can do this: VATS issue, ignition switch, starter/solenoid, bad ground, or neutral safety switch.
Does anyone have any other isdeas?
Does the ignition swith have funky bolts/TORX head or anything else?
The car is 3 1/2 hours away from me so I have to take along what I think I'll need. I want to be prepared.
If it's the neutral safety switch, is that on the shifter or in the trans? If it's in the shifter, what do I need to pull the console so I can get to it?
I'd start digging into just the starter.....or fusible links in that general area
The Starter won't come out unless you drop the exhaust....so the three bolts that hold the down tube to the Exhaust manifold (both sides) and the mid support will have to be removed. The Smog AIR tube is also connected there..you'll need to loosen the hose clamp and feed it down as the exhaust drops.
Take any piece of wood (like a skateboard deck) and put it on your jack.....this wood holds up each side of the exhaust and makes it easy to jack it back up into place.

I would get a remote starter button and try cranking it over with that. If it works you'll know you're not getting power to the starter, but you can get the car running and see how it drives.
What town is the car located in?
you can try the old screwdriver across the two terminals at the starter to see if it is the solenoid....
But those terminals are way up under there. Be prepped to jack the car up pretty high to work on the starter. Take your floor jack and jack stands with you.
How bad are those bolts usually by now? Should I expect them to be rusty and need replacing, and if so, what size are those bolts? Or, now that I think of it, aren't those studs that screw into the header?
Sounds like replacing the starter in his driveway wouldn't be too fun. The starter is on the passenger side as I recall too.
I think the remote starter switch will be a great thing. Worst comes to worst, I use that to get it home, then fix it at home.

There are studs with a nut on them.....your stud may twist out...so take some lube and put it on the stud prior to twisting away.....and it is a 15mm nut. When you get the exhaust flange out, take a round rasp and file the flange hole from round to oval...this makes it much easier to stab once you get to the point of putting it back on...
The studs are easy to see....I forgot that you have to unhook the single O2 sensor.
And yes the studs are going to be rusty.
When I take mine loose, it is 5 nuts and then a replacement stud that I use in the place of a nut....
The starter will come out w/ exhaust in place. Check for power at big wire connection(12v all the time), small wire when only cranking. You can try hitting the starter w/ a hammer, sometimes they'll start(only if it has power). Anti theft relay & fuse are located behind the convience center. Also make sure the starter case is grounded, do a continuity test to neg. battery post.
