This car has been running fine until the other day, going down the highway, I suddenly lost power and the car would not run past an idle. every time I give it gas, it wants to die.
So, I replaced the fuel filter and while I had it off I turned the key on and let it purge some fuel from the line before replacing it. The filter looked pretty bad.
Well, that wasn't the problem, same thing. It acts like the filter is clogged. I can take the breather off and watch the fuel shoot into the engine. When I give it more gas, the fuel sputters and the car wants to die.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Could be low fuel pressure, from a bad pump or leaky rubber hose above the pump(leaking inside the take).
Bad throttle post sensor, bad vacuum hose to the map sensor.
Cat converter maybe plugged up, not likely though. Any codes?
I guess a good place to start at is checking the f. pressure. On 84 the filter is clamped on, so get a universal fuel press testing kit, make sure it has a tee in the kit to tie into the lines. Pessure should be about 9-14 psi.

That is what was my problem. It got worse the more I tried to get it to fire then I lost all spray. When i pulled the pump the 2 inch piece of hose was rotted out so it basically just pumped the fuel right back into the tank. It is about a 30 minute job to fix it.

How hard is it to pull the pump? I Have limited tools and knowledge and as you know there is not much space to work under the car. I had a heck of a time just changing the filter.
I don't have a fuel pressure gauge and really hate to spend a bunch of money for one just to use this one time so I will try all I can before going that route.
When I had the filter off, I would turn the key on and it would pump a stream of gas for about 2 seconds then stop. If I turn the key off, wait a few seconds, then I could do it again. Should it have continued to pump as long as the key was on or was it suppose to stop after a short time because the engine wasn't turning?

This is normal. The car turns on the fuel pump and charges the system. If the engine is turning it should continue to pump fuel.
You may be able to rent a fuel pressure kit from autozone or another local parts store. No sense in changing parts that aren't bad. There could also be a bad regulator as someone else has mentioned.
Lets find out what is going on before spending money on more parts.

I pulled the pump and sure enough, that hose is split. I went to autozone and they said they don't sell hose like that and gave me a piece of injector hose to use. Will that work? Will it hurt it being submursed in gasoline all the time?

From what I can tell this is called a pulsation damper. But when I go to the parts store, they can't find anything in their books.
Can I use just a piece of rubber hose?
Good job! Yeah, you can use efi hose, the pulsator should only be on port injected engines. I could be wrong though. It doesn't matter cause I don't have one on my 84 & it runs good.
