Just had my 700R4 rebuilt by a transmission mechanic and we reinstalled it without much difficulty. After test driving the car I noticed a sloppy first to second gear shift. The reason for the rebuild was a common 3/4 clutch pack failure. Prior to removing the transmission first and second worked fine ... just didn't have third or fourth gear.
I verified proper TV cable adjustment and fluid level. Any ideas on why the 1/2 shift is not as firm as it was prior to rebuild?
Can you get a firm shift if you manual shift from 1-2? What about 3-4 shift is it also sloppy? I have my 700r4 apart and just trying to think of possibilities. Bottom line if its not right make the mechanic make it right.
If I manually shift from first to second ... it's the same thing, sloppy. The 3rd to 4th shift seems a bit sloppy but not like the 1 to 2 shift. I understand there is only one band and it is engaged only when the trans is in 2nd and 4th.
My question is ... is this band adjustable or is it controlled by line pressure only?
As far as the mechanic that rebuilt it for me ... he does 700's after work, as a sideline, for $300. I don't think he did anything wrong ... I just want to understand what may be causing the problem before I call him.

It is not adjustable, but there is a measurement you must take before you pull apart the trans, to determine if the pin that engages the band is the proper length, as a new band could call for a different size pin. manual shifts get oil directed from different source than 2-4 servo (automatic shift).
