Default optispark drive mechanism

I noticed the keyed spline that drives the opti actually came out in my hand. It's about 2" long and connects to another spline up in the engine. This is the device that actually drives the opti. I'm curious about what's behind the cover, but not curious enough to remove it, if I don't have too. Can it be installed wrong? Is there another bearing or bushing in there that needs to be changed? Is there any way this could be the cause of the past 3 failures of optis?
Thanks!

Yes it drives the opti.Your cam shaft is what the spline goes into.It only fits one way.The 92-93 are different than 95-96 not sure which one 94 is.

I noticed a little play up and down back and forth. As a drive mechanism, it's tight. Are these changed with the opti? The only bearing then would be that on the front of the cam shaft. After 3 optis, call me a gambler. I'd like to try to get it right this time. My plan is a new Delco first gen. opti from Summit, modified with a MSD cap, rotor, and vacume and air inlet, and a new coil. If it don't last, hello Delteq!

Hi
Did you ever diagnose the cause of the 3 failures to your OptiSpark distributor?

Code 36, The last time this happened I was in complete denial. Couldn't believe the opti could be bad. I had just changed it. It's off the car now. Waiting for money to buy a new one.

My plan is a new AC/Delco first gen. opti from Summit, modified with a MSD cap, rotor, and vacume and air inlet, and a new MSD blaster coil. If it don't last, hello Delteq!

after 3 failures, I'd be checking the harness out.
