hello all.im new to the vette life,i picked up a 86 and i really like it but i am having some issues that are frustrating, im having a problem with the brakes dragging when its hot, after i drive it for awhile they start dragging, then when i let it cool down they stop, also i think this problem might be affected by the dragging brakes but not completly, when i run the a/c it slowly heats up then gets hot it will keep going up it got to about 225 then i had a puddle of coolant on the ground under it,then when i turn the a/c off it starts to slowly cool back down??? like today i ran 25 miles to work when it was still some what cool out with the a/c on and it ran cool all the way there then when i left when its really hot out the brakes started dragging and started to run hot
You need to isolate the brake problem. When they start to drag, jack up the car and see which brake is dragging. Then you can open the bleeder and see if that releases the brake or if you have to pry the pads away.
Your car should run a little hotter with the AC on and 225 is not too hot. You shouldn't have coolent leaking at that temp though. You need to find the source of the leak.
the brakes are dragging it slows the car down, and it goes away when i park i think its all 4 dragging.when it gets warm its boils over and out of the overflow/resevor cap

You can also install a fan switch which will get the fans to come on earlier. I got mine the day after I blew the head gasket from over heating lol Well we wont have thatproblem anylonger hopefully. Always keep an eye on those temps. Im not sure if you have aluminum heads on yours but id never let it get past 230 again on my car that is the limit for me. The switch I purchased will turn the fans on at 200 and off at 185 so I dont see myself having this problem any longer plus the car runs alittle better at cooler temps during hot summer days. Im in the rebuild process as we speak from head gasket and I would not wish this job on anyone. Best of luck with your new vette, you will grow to love it Im sure
the car ran alot cooler today and the brakes did not drag at all, looks to be ok,the fluid was probably shot it looked rough, but it was tricky to bleed the brakes but i finally got it
no need to use a fan switch if everything is working ok, thats just hiding a problem.
225 is perfectly normal but the boiling/overflowing tells me pressure is not building which usually means an opening or too much air. check that the rad cap is ALL the way on ( mine has a half way detent that can feel like its on) and there are no other leaks in the system. My money is on the cap being on incorrectly or just bad.
use the digital gauge to check the temp, not the analog one.
I have not had tried this so its given with salt...
search for burpng the cooling system. Apparently air can get trapped behind the themostat so the system may need to be "burped". If air is in there it can pervent pressure buildup and cause overheating/boiling. someone else that knows this procedure may chime in.
i got the car with a rigged up fan that automaticly went on with the ignition switch,so i got a relay and got that hooked the right away and put a toggle on it so i can turn it on when i want, i did a complete flush and put some new coolant and water wetter in it and i had the car out in 100 degree weather today and it never got over 200 with the air on full blast,i also did alot of hard braking in traffic all day to make sure the brakes didnt start dragging again, and all is good.man these cars are fun to drive and they get alot of attention ,some of the things i need to do is get a new climate control box, pass window switch, the roof is cracked and i want to redu the door panals and decent paint job and this car will be top notch. anyone know where i can find a new roof or skin?
