Default OFFICIAL POLL: Preferred Oil Weight

I think this would be an easier way to see which oil type people prefer...

i think it depends more on climate than an actual preference
I run 5w30 in winter and 10w30 in summer, i guess i would prefer 10w30.

I use 5-30 year round...

synthetics are inherently thinner, and to be honest, even on a hot day, the oil will set into the 30 weight sooner...

either 5 or 10w30 is alright for the lifestyle my Vette sees. (rarely below 32) The fact that it's synthetic (I've used Mobile 1, Pennzoil, Castrol and Quakerstate) and is changed frequently enough is important.

I've heard 7,500 miles, 10,000 miles with a filter change at 5000 miles, 3000 miles (which is a waste of dough) and what I do: filter and oil at 5000 miles. I could go longer, but 5000 is a real easy number to remember.

Where I come from it normally is between 75 and 90 degrees all year long. A multi viscosity grade oil is not needed. But I like Mobil 1 in the 15w-50w grade. I f they made the Mobil 1 in straight 40 w, I would buy it. But th emore important question should be, how often do you change your oil?

synthetic oils break down much more slowly than mineral base oils but keep in mind its the amount of dirt from the combustion process thats suspended in the oil that is the main reason you need to change the oil because most filters dont clean the oil very well be cause the finer the mesh or the tighter the filter element is the less oil per minute per square inch of surface area and because dirty oil is better than no oil from a clogged filter the manufactures tend to use fairly coarse filtration elements, look here

Mobile 1 5W-30 in the vette, but I usually put 10W-40 in my other cars.

Sorry for the question here - but what would be good for my '87? I'm going to go for my first oil change so any advice would be great. I'd like to go with synthetic. I'm assuming that mineral is in there right now...

Thanks...

Sal, Look on the oil fill cap the correct weight oil will be on there. The engineer's that made the engine know what they were doing. I would put in that weight oil in the car.

I see you got olive oil in there....but you're missing the caster oil....have been running all my cars on straight caster oil for many years now......just like the WW1 aces in their planes.......and I never have to worry about being constapated either !!!
