Default How long will the LT1 go?

I have 177K on this engine. I've put about 1.5K miles on it since I bought it. The oil is real clean. It used about .5 quart in 1.5K miles. The engine seems to run smooth. Can't tell how much power it has because of the 2.59 rear end. Time to look for and engine rebuilder or do I have much longer to go?

That motor has a lot of life left in it. 250 k is not unusual. Most get bored/stroked much sooner just because everyone wants more power.

I got 80k-ish on my '95 and it barely used a fraction of a quart in 5k miles. (maybe .25 qt). My experience with small block chevies is that maybe by 140k it'll start loosening up and some oil use is normal. With good care, the pistons and rings go before the bearings get used up.

I think most people rebuild before it breaks because they get bored with stock or they take the car half way aprt for other reasons.

My 92 put down 280 rwhp with no mods other then a corsa catback system with over 115k on the clock, through a auto. :O

That was awhile ago, now I have a fresh 355 getting ready to go in not because the current motor is tired but because I wanted to do heads / cam / ect and ran across a smoking deal on another LT1 from a 92 vette. Had a BUNCH of work done to it but needed a new bottom end. Figured instead of putting heads / cam on a now 135k mile motor, buy the other lt1, rebuild / hotrod and install complete.

Ralph,

wow, you got a lot on your plate.

You are looking for a new engine, a new rear axle, chrome or black valve covers, looking for another C5, shocks, radio, antenna, day time running lights, and Did you ever find the MAF in your 92?

Your profile is full of good news

It looked fishy with the C5 pick asking about a LT1,but I guess he could have both, but that is a lot of work.

I don't have a C5 anymore. Wrapped it around a tree about 2 weeks ago. Just have a C4 now. I've restored 2 basket case Vettes before, an '84 and a '99. Picked up this '92 for a song which is in reasonable shape. I'm just asking questions of people more knowledgeable on 2nd gen. C4s than me. When I'm done this '92 will be a beautiful show car just as the other 2 were. I'll have to change my avatar picture. My C5 is gone. It was totaled.

What's with all the stirring up of drama in the C4 section lately?

I get the impression some people in the C4 forum think I'm a phony. I own a '92 C4. I knew a lot about the '84 because I restored one. 2 weeks ago I had a beautiful '99 C5. I destroyed it. I slammed into a tree. I knew a lot about that car. I'm trying to learn from people who know more than me about my '92. I didn't know a '92 didn't have a MAF but had a MAP. C4s have quite a few configurations.
C4s have 3 generations of engines (CFI, TPI and LT1). 3 generations of ECM (pre-OBD, OBD1 and OBD2) and 2 generations of body styles (84-90, and 91-96). With all these configurations I have to ask a lot of questions to learn about my particular C4, the '92. Most everybody has been very nice and helpful which I appreciate. Unfortunately there have been some jerks which I'll ignore.

Dear PLRX, would you please not use MY pic of my dash for your troll alert animation? And please don't pm me like the last guy. Anything you've got to say to me you can let everybody see it. Thank you.

I've never PM you. The Pm to aurora got nothing to do with you or the dash in my GIF. BTW that is not your dash

I didn't mean that you had sent me a pm, I meant don't send me a pm. Come on, you know perfectly well that is the pic I shot of my dash. Gee, it is right in this thread I started. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-g...ew-gauges.html. So I'm asking you again not to use the pic of my dash I shot, for your troll animation. Thank you.

Come on PLRX, send the troll police back to the barracks.

When I removed my 135,000 mile Lt1 engine, it was nearly new looking inside. The engine spent it's entire life on Mobil 1 oil changes. The oil was changed 3500 miles religiously. I rebuilt my engine only because I raised my rev limiter without changing out my valves springs and dropped a valve into #7 cylinder.

If I didnt drop a valve, I have no doubt my engine could go 300,000 to 400,000 before compression or bearings take a crap.

What's the troll alert for? People who camp on the forum and don't have a life?

I go to the forum to seek wisdom from others where I have no experience. I've also given advise. I can give really good advise on the '84 CFI. I know it well and took it from measly 205 HP at the fly wheel to 265 HP. I can also give advise on C5s. Took it from 345 HP to over 410 HP. I have little experience with an LT1 and 2ng gen C4. I'm learning though. I'm already starting the beautify process on this '92 C4. When I'm done about a year from now this C4 will look beautiful and rip like hell.

I should post pictures of my '84. I got $10K for that car. That's unheard of for an '84. To get that kind of money for an '84 it must have been drop dead gorgeous and with performance.
