Default The squish area...40K?

Since I was dyno'd a couple of weeks ago I've been looking at alot of little things that need to be done to make my combo come together. I look at some of the guys cars on this forum and many have very similar combos, yet certain cars really shine, probalby due to the details. One that sticks out is Ralphs car. For a basic setup, that car flies. Getting back to my question, I started looking at the squish area on my car and I have about a 66k squish. Is it worth the effort to bring that down to about 40k? I'm using what I believe is about a 41k head gasket now. Can I use the head gasket such as the one that TPIS offers to tighten up the squish and probalby bump compression .5 point or so? Thanks

John, I was figuring that the piston is down right at 25k and the 41k of the head gasket, putting it at 66K.

25k in the holes? Sounds like bone stock deck height. I would be willing to bet you are in the process of rebuilding the engine without having it decked yet.

This is actually a good thing because at this point, you can do it right. First you will want to measure the stroke of the crankshaft on each of the four corner cylinders ( a majority of machine shops screw this up and come out with different strokes on each journal ). If all the stroke measurements come out the same, you can be fairly sure the crank was ground properly.

Once you verify the crank is done correctly, install a piston in each of the four corners and measure the deck height of each one at it's highest point, and mark the measurement on the block itself ( next to the cylinder it was measured from. )

You will more than likely find that there is a difference in piston depth on all four.

What you do with the measurements is to take the lower of the cylinder bank, subtract it from the largest, and deck the block to correct that much on the specific bank. This is the correct way to 'square' a block.

Oh...as for deck height, I like between .017-.013 in the hole, as long as all cylinders read the same measurement.

I know that you are just adding up what you expect, rather than actual measurement - but if it really is 66 thou, that is too much. Let me just say that even with the bump in compression, that your engine would be more detonation resistant at 40 thou vs 66 thou of quench height.

Does anyone know which thinner head gasket is the better choice to use?
