Yet another 4+3 slipping problem
I have a '88 with 70K on the odometer. I bought the car 7 years ago with about 53K miles. The 4+3 had been serviced and the clutch had been recently been replaced. I did get the receipts for this work. I have been very gentle with this trans because I have heard many stories about the 4+3 trans and it's poor reputation.Recently when driving in 4th gear and the overdrive engaged, when I step on the gas to pass, instead of dropping out of overdrive the car acts like I'm pressing in the clutch just enough to allow the RPM's to climb. The car will excellerate and the clutch will grab after a few seconds so the RPM's drop. Is my clutch out of adjustment or do I have some other serious problem with the overdrive unit?
Does anyone in the Minneapolis / St.Paul area know of a good trans shop experienced with 4+3's?????
Also, the Super T-10 transmission is very strong and should perform well for many years if serviced properly. The Doug Nash OD unit will likewise perform well for many years, BUT you must change the filter and fluid every couple of years AND make sure you keep the proper level of automatic tranny fluid in it.
When changing the filter & OD fluid, you must make sure you do not bend or warp the pan as they are fragile and they are getting very, very difficult to find a replacement.

Then the fluid bypasses internally, and the pressure that squeezes the clutches just bleeds off and the clutches slip....burning them up.
Replacing the internal seals will restore it to proper internal pressures.
a kit is usually about $150 and labor is usually about $450 plus R&R
