Default 87 C4. How do you access the ecm for tuning?

1. Where is it?
2. How do you connect to it?
3. Does it have to be removed?

I have just spent an hour removing panels under the drivers and passenger side and can't see it. The manual says its under the instrument panel which is in the centre!

Its mounted vertical behind the breadbox on the passenger side. Drop the black plastic trim panel, get on your back with a light and look up. 2 ten mm bolts hold it in place. You may not actually see it because of the bazillion wires hanging down in the way. Ive had mine out so many times, I do it by feel. Takes about 1 minute.

Much appreciated. By breadbox I presume you mean where the big black safety cushion with CORVETTE written on it on the passenger side is.

Found it. You have to be a contortionist. My back was threatening to seize up if I stayed in that position for much longer.

What next? Disconnect the battery, unplug cables, remove the 2 bolts and then remove ecm? Or can you plug the tuning hardware in (I have APU1 and GP1from Moates on order) without removing the ecm?

Ribbon cable will fit with ECM in place,
Drop ECM ,fit adapter and cable ,reinstall ECM with cover plate off leaving cable hanging out where you can get at it

Thanks Rod.

Are you talking about fitting the G1 adaptor (which I have also ordered as part of the GP1 package) to one of the sockets on the outside of the ecm or are you saying open up the ecm by removing cover plate and plugging adaptor in somewhere inside the ecm?

I found the instructions at http://support.moates.net/2008/10/31/g1/

So you have to remove ecm, open ecm cover, take out memcal, plug memcal into G1 adaptor, plug 28 pin emulation cable into G1 adaptor, plug G1 adaptor into ecm, reinstall ecm with ecm cover off, ensure 28 pin emulation cable is hanging out for plugging into APU1.

I have just realised that there is no point bypassing the stock chip with the tuning hardware if I don't have another chip ready to go.

The first thing I need to do then is get a copy of the bin file from my stock ecm chip and then make another identical chip. Anyone know how to get the bin file?

Most tuning the '165 ECM use the '89 ARAP bin.
In TP if you go
File ,
Open bin ,
it should by default take you to the Bin directory where there is a ARAP bin
Only way you can read your stock memcal is with a adapter that allows it to be read in the ZIP socket on top of APU1

Rod is right, most start with an ARAP bin and a 6E def file. Stock 87 will be a 32b I think. ARAP tune makes the 9th injector unneccessary. Cold start is in the tune. I havent had the CS injector on my 87 for years. If you go to the Tunerpro site and click downloads, you will find the bins and def (xdf) files you need.

So to read my factory tune I have to buy another adaptor. (HDR1)

http://www.moates.net/documentation....entation_id=12

I had a look at Tunerpro and found the ARAP bin and opened it. But screen is blank. In the help it talks about choosing a xdf file for editing. Can't seem to find one. Not sure why you need one. Why doesn't it just show the settings?

In Tunerpro, click on bins, ARAP should be there. Click on xdf and see if 6E is there.
Open them both and had have a look. If they are not there go ahead and download them from the Tunerpro site. They will show up in tunerpro. You dont really need to open the stock bin but you can find it on Moates.net, if you look. I'd find it for you but I forgot my password.

In TP RT, click view, then, item summary list, then, item list. Stuff should show up.

Unfortunately nothing showed up. I went to the tunerpro website and found the $6e def file but couldn't see how to download it!

What is the difference between a bin file, def file and an ecu file?

Have you physically removed the cold start injector (to make sure it doesn't leak)?

No way to use it with my intake.
I seriously think you may need to do some more reading to get a better grasp on this. Downloading files is not that hard . There is a lot of info on the forums. thirdgen.org is a big help.

I am the first to admit this. But you guys are a great help. While my tuning hardware is in transit from the States to Australia I am trying to learn as much as I can. Don't want to change the tune and spin my motor in the wrong direction and end up with 4 reverse gears.

$6E and $8D definitions are included in the TP program as you downloaded it.
At top click on XDF ,
Select XDF and it should take you to Bin definitions where you select the 6E.xdf file

Bin file is the actual individual tune
Definition file (xdf ) allows you to read that file.
Each type ( ECM / engine type ) has it's own definition file.
That is why you have 32B , 6E and other definition files for the same '165 ECM

Emailed you some files

If you remove it you have to buy the delete kit to plug hole.
Unless CSI is physically leaking you just leave it in place to fill the hole and remove the wiring to it
