i have an 88 model with the 4+3 trans. One day my clutch wouldnt disengage and after three or four weekends of bleeding the clutch and after buying new master and slave cylinders with more bleeding to follow, i decided to pull the trans out. i found that the throwout bearing is larger than the input shaft and is supposed to slide on a "metal sleeve" so to speak. that metal sleeve had sliden forward in front of the throwout bearing causing it not to move.
my question is this: is there a way to fix this problem such as a throwout bearing with a center hole slightly larger than the input shaft without using the "metal sleeve"
The 4-speed portion of the 4+3 trans is no different than a Borg-Warner Super T-10 4-speed tranny. The housing or sleeve that covers the input shaft is there to provide centering for the throwout bearing and to protect the input shaft.
The sleeve is pressed into the input shaft/bearing retainer. The input shaft has some movement even when installed so the sleeve is designed to protect the input shaft.
It sounds like the sleeve has completely slipped off of the retainer. Chances are that you will need to replace the front retainer. There are 4 bolts that hold it to the trans case and it should come right off without having to take the tranny apart. Finding the part may be another story.
thanks for the info. i vaguely remember seeing a post on here a while back of someone talkin of replacing their TB with one that just slides over the input shaft.but if that sleeve was designed to protect the shaft, then i dont wanna try that route.
