Using 1.6 rockers, what would be the largest cam you could "comfortably" use for the street in a 383.

Way more to it than that.
Your question is similar to walking into a restaurant and asking "what should I eat and how much.
A cam is a tuning tool used to make your engine components work in harmony.
RPM, compression, tuning, intake manifold, cubic inches, cylinder head, exhaust, converter, rear gear etc are all inpouts that need to be established before choosing a cam.

Are you worried the XFI280 is too much or too little?

Either way, you could probably pick up power with a tighter LSA based on Vizard's stuff here:
http://www.popularhotrodding.com/tec...ics/index.html

105 LSA, 270-285 duration based on the article above. Haven't heard of many runny cams with less than a 108-110 LSA though. I am no cam expert, but if you can use higher ratio rockers to drop the LSA down and go with a minimum of 108-110 if it is going to work. I would call an expert.

Your torque dyno numbers in your previous new set up thread seem low IMHO-388. Is this behind the cam question. ? Have same cam in my 396.

That is 388rwtq or ~446 to 454tq at the flywheel. What would you expect?

The XFI280 is probably one of the best "off the shelf" street cams out there. ON What DO i BASED MY ASSUMPTION, YOU ASK?
Bret Bauer admitted that to me.
EFI get the jeebies when you throw tight LSA's at them. The XFI is engineered to avoid that while providing good all around power. It is a moderately sized cam with great street manners. And yes, the cam "talks" even with a 113 degree LSA.

478+. Go to the GM high tech article on heads. Same heads/cam and 383 LT1 engine was 478. Have not seen many stroker LT1's with RWTQ less than 400.

I wasn't disagreeing, just curious. What did you make with the 396?

Have a link to that article?

I think that is a nice streetable cam for your set up. More cam will give up bottom end and midrange to make more top end power. And depending on how much more cam you go, you may need more compression. I think you have a nice streetable combo right now. The other thing is big cams become less streetable. Sure you can drive them on the street, but they will wear on you with a rough idle, and cam surge at low rpm's. But to each their own. And more cam will raise your power band, which could create different problems.

when it comes to cam advice... my first call is ALWAYS to compcams. you tell them exactly what your setup is. rearend gear ratio and everything, so make sure you have the info. ive never gone wrong with compcams. 800-999-0853
