Re: Head porting article. (65Z01)
I have the article and its pretty good.
I pulled my LT4 heads and started to port them myself but quickly concluded that it was worth the money to have someone who know what they are doing.
You should have an expert do the 3-angle valve job and it turned out not to be that much more for a shop to do the whole thing. You may want to call around your area.
Maybe a CNC shop would be more reasonable than in the article. Of course I would want em flow benched after I ported them to assure all flowed in the ball park. Plus I would just like to do that job; it sounds like fun and very rewarding (I like doing my own work where possible). But I will check out pricing when it's time.
FYI: the May, 2002 issue of CHP has a nice article on head porting by a novice with expert guidance.
I ran out and got the CHP mag. It's quite good.
If you want more diagrams, cutaways showing metal to be removed...
...Or need GM part #s for older HP parts; get a copy of "How To Hotrod Small-Block Chevys" by Fisher & Waar; HP books, 1976.
It's out of print, but Amazon has them in the Used section...
I've had a copy of this book since the late '70's; loaned it out, never got it back...Ordered a "used" one from Amazon last Sept; it came in in "brand-new" (unopened!) condition, at half-price...(~$9.00)...Soft-cover...
It's old; but the head (and all the articles) specs still apply...

Re: Head porting article. (65Z01)
The AFR on my dyno runs were better after porting. It takes a second or two after WOT for the AFR to change at the meter.
The were low 12.3 - 12.5 before and 12.6 - 12.8 after. The Dyno shop said you want it to be about 12.6-12.8 for max power. By the way, the computer has not been reprogramed and has the stock exhaust system.
This car runs very smooth and hard from the stock 725 rpm idle right up up to 6400 rpm fuel shut off. I highly recommend having having your heads ported if you want to keep the stock cam and stock exhaust.
