A couple of days ago as I backed out of my parking spot and with the motor still at idle dropped into drive while still rolling backwards.
There was a loud bang and the whole car jumped. However I drove home with no problems or any unusual noises. Last night after an hour on the freeway at 5mph I finally caught a break in traffic so I hit the throttle, it downshifted into 1st gear and another loud bang and it felt like I got hit in the @$$ with a sledge hammer. Again I drove the rest of the way with no problems. My guess is the dana 36 is about dead but I don't understand how it can make that loud a bang and still move. My experience is usually the car does not move under its own power after the big bang. Any ideas?
Either the diff or the tranny is on the way out...That is weird that the car still drives...I was driving another one of my cars one time and heard a loud bang, and that completely killed the tranny.
I had a problem like that with my camaro. It turned out that the "ladder bar" part of the suspension had broken loose and when under torque it was hitting the bottom of the car. Bang! I thought the tranny was going to fall out. Turned out to be a few bolts had loosened up and fell out. Easy fix for the camaro.....

In this case it would be the C beam bolts at the diff and/or the trans. Also, check the ujoints, driveshaft and half shafts.
