I'll be replacing the battery tray on the 89 tomorrow. [I don't have the car here] Is there anything tricky I'm going to run into? Any advice/tips? Tried to search, but couldn't find anything on replacing the actual tray...
Just curious, why are you replacing the tray? Battery leak down?
I just removed my stock tray a few weeks back. Went with a rear mounted battery. I think my old one is sitting in the trash bucket.
This one was half-gone, like somebody tried to put an Optima in it, but cracked the whole front half off. BTW-there's a total of FOUR bolts holding it in. There's two more on the "flange" located at the bottom of the bracket.
Removing the "two 10mm bolts" accomplishes nothing. Live and learn.
Make sure you don't misalign the removable fender panel the battery rests behind. If you do, you could crack it when you go to open/close your driver's side door.

Thanks! I was pretty careful when I re-assembled, and made sure I did a very slow door-opening test to make sure I got it right.
Remove the battery. Underneath are 2 10mm head bolts that hold the tray down to the frame. Remove these and the tray comes out.
I replaced mine awhile back. It was more than two bolts. I believe the two you are referring to came straight up and out (vertical). The battery tray on my 94 had a couple more that mounted horizontally to the outside of the frame just to the rear of the left front tire. I wish I had taken some pictures. I don't have pictures but there is some direction in the FSM. Not sure if my set up was year specific but I am willing to bet that you will need to remove more than the two bolts. You may have some issues if you ever had a leakly battery with... it is rust city under most of these old battery trays.

Oh crap. I am behind around here... You did discover the other two! Sounds like you are done and earned the merit badge.

Does anyone know the GM part number for the vertical bolts that fasten the battery tray to the frame rail in a C4? The original ones were corroded so badly they were fused to the steel sleeves inside the mounting holes in the tray. A previous owner had modified the tray to install an oversized battery that interfered with the fender louver. I got the lower mounting bolts but can't find replacements for the upper ones.
Please help if you can.
Thanks!
