My CD player doesn't work on my 1993 LT1. I understand this is a pretty common problem. Is there anywhere that "refurbishes" these for a reasonable price, or should I just go to a car-stereo shop and replace it with an after-market head unit?
I went with Doctor Don's. Seems like a lot of people on the forum have used him. He basically rebuilds the whole CD and Tape unit and cleans everything to where it looks like new. Here is the website. http://www.doctordons.homestead.com/
Check him out and give him a call. Very reasonable prices and excellent turnaround!!
If you are not concerned with keeping the 93 completely stock, then I suggest aftermarket. I Even on the best day (new) the 92/93 CD player was temperamental and sensitive to road conditions. Last month I decided to go with a dual din JVC, but retained my factory Bose Speakers. The dual din JVC handles only one CD at a time (not a stacker), but the sound quality that I now have meets or exceeds that of the factory stereo. The dual din fits the slot perfectly. All I did was remove the alignment pin from the back of the factory radio and installed it on the JVC. The rest is easy ~ just brace the stereo for proper alignment.
In order to use the Bose Speakers, you will need to buy the Crutchfield integration harness. Some will tell you that it doesn't work well, but I will argue till I am blue in the face. My experience is that it works exactly as designed. If you decide to go this route, please contact me so I can give you some pointers.
I have heard that JVC is junk, blah, blah, blah. I am not a sound expert, but for my $$$, it was the right decision.
