Did a search on this topic but did not find anything of real value.....so hopefully I can obtain some valuable information here.......I installed an analog guage cluster with nice white face Autometer gauges ......all work well except for the speedo......the speedo needle jumps around eratically at low speeds, especially during accelertation......it seems to level out nicely around 60mph+......I know someone out there on this forum mentioned something about a VSS (vehicle speed sensor issue). I think the general idea expressed was I needed a early 90's F body speed sensor?????? is that correct due to the F-body had an analog dash during that time?? any ideas will be greatly appreciated!
87+ firebirds have electronic speedos that use a VSS in the trans that outputs the same signal as 84-91 vette trans does...camos were 'phased in' to elec speedos next couple of years...the vette atari dash processes the VSS signal internally, birds and camos use a '4-out-buffer' p/n 25071437 to process the VSS signal for their analog speedo and also for their 'cruise/kill-me control'...IIRC the actual trans sensor from birds/camos varies physically on some models and will not 'bolt-on' to a vette trans (no help, anyway)...there were also some other late 80's Gm models that use that 25071437 buffer...most of the buffers are yellow plastic stand-alone modules abt 3''x4''x.75'' a few are white plastic, all have (had?) a paper tag with p/n on the exterior...there is another module, most white plastic, abt half that size, which will NOT work, has a different p/n on it...try to get the two connectors/pigtails with the buffer if shopping 'j-y supply', but the module uses 'vintage' style edge connectors and the module case opens ez so hard wiring is possible.
Or - hit up DakotaDigital for their speedo digital interface/adapter. Simpler and easier than sorting out the OEM DRAC modules, and also allows you to calibrate the speedo readout. Works well - and a nice company to deal with also.
