The MAF can prevent a start. Try to start the engine a couple of times after you unplug the sensor, Mine was cranking and catching and dying. but it would catch on the second try after unplugging the MAF (but never the first time). You can also try unplugging the timing connector at the distributor to test for the pickup coil.
Check for fuel, check for ignition while cranking.
You need spark, fuel, compression, and the mechanical parts to be working.
Check each one of these, and you will find your problem.

The ownner of the local Napa store told me his C4 didn't start due to a bad MAF.
