I'm trying to identify a Dana 44 over the phone. The guy cannot find the build numbers on the case, so how else can I have him determine what it is? Thanks for the help.
Is it from a C4? The side braces on a Dana 44 make a V shape in the webbing, and the Dana 36 makes a W shape. I think the Dana 36 also has a bolt in the upper middle of the rear cover taht the 44 does not.
The ID numbers should be right on the bottom side of the case. Should also have the ratio imprinted into the case. If he can't find them, then he is hiding something or it isn't what you want IMO.
Of course our diffs are not complete solid axles as in JonM's illustation. The "Bill of Materials" (BM) number is what you want to get. This describes the exact configuration of that particular diff. The BM no. is a six digit number, starting with a "6". After the six digit no. is a dash or a space and one or two more digits. The number after the "6" is usually a "0". On the truck rear ends (illustraited) the first two ("60") digits are often left off. I can de-code Dana bill of material numbers, if anyone need assistance.

I always thought that too, until I did the dana 44 swap myself. Mine had the stock, original dana 36, it's a Z-51; and the cover webbing is identical to the dana 44's! Go figure..... The thin flange at the top of the cover where it bolts to the carrier itself-the 36 has one bolt in the middle and the 44 has two bolts on each side.
