Default Codes 43 and 64?!

Hi everyone. My car is giving me problems. When it is idleing in the garage it sounds / runs fine. When I drive it, it sounds very loud and horrible. It is backfiring like crazy. I jumped the codes and got a 43 and a 64. So, these tell me that I had a problem with either the knock sensor and/or the O2 sensor. Right?

Could this cause the problem I am describing? Where do I start?

Help!!

Thanks,
-Rick

Yes, code #43 is the Knock Sensor Circuit and code #64 is Bank 2 RF Heated Oxygen Sensor #1 Circuit Lean.

I would start there.

So, by start there you mean replace the knock sensor and the O2 sensor?! (pardon the ignorance here!)

You need to run the diagnostic test on those sensors as spelled out in the FSM.

Same problem same answer change the front two o2 sensors. It is setting off the knocks I would change the knocks while under there more for a proper flush than anything else.

Throwing parts at a problem without diagnosis is like playing the lottery. You may get lucky, but you also may just wind up a little poorer.

I have the '92 FSM and can post pages from it if helpful.

This says that poster "larry_c4" needs to do some diagnostics and maybe explain further his circumstances.

You're "assuming" but your post count is +1

You've "assumed" again to CYA but the post count is + another 1. How did you determine your thoughts were "normal maintenance"?

See my "headlight gremlin" thread from last year to understand why good diagnosis is rule #1.

This is a forum that folks come for help and opinions this is mine do what you want and let us know. I always want to know what the fix was always learning.
If you don't agree with it then put yours in to help. Bitching about it is fine if it helps you in some way.
Sure getting proper diagnosis is always best and reading the book will do this.
I chose to try to help sometimes I get lucky. Some just tell you to read the book thier choice.
Some do not have the tools or knowledge.
Some do not want to pay hundreds of dollars to have it done.
I could not care less about thread count. Are there prizes that I don't know about? LMAO

Nice commentary but no helpful information to help OP. You seem to have a vast collection of books. Use them to help would be great. ing around to bitch about my suggestions do not help the OP. I use my years of working on cars and thirty plus years building them in the factory to try to help. I cannot see from here so just guessing. If you like following me around and bitching feel free if it gives you enjoyment.

I used the paper clip to pull codes via the digital dash and now got 3 codes, H42, H43, H64. I cleared them all out of the ecm via dash. I have been driving it and it seemed to be running good for the first two days (after clearing the codes) But...today the SES light came on and I immediately checked for codes. Just as I thought, a H64 (Oxygen sensor) and no other codes present. This tells me that the oxygen sensor(s) are Causing the knock sensor code (43) over time. I think by replacing the O2 sensor, the knock codes won't re-appear.

Does yours have two? If so replace both to match should run much better.

I am pretty sure the LT1 has two sensors. Even though its 'Right o2 lean' I think I am going to replace them both.

I think your right on yours mine has three but they were setting up for ob2 in 94. Get the o2 socket from Oriely's for $20 deposit use the short one pass side is a bit harder.
I did the knocks and fuel filter since I was under there but that's just me.
