Default 4+3 problem

I have a 84 with a 4+3 trans. I replaced the OD 2 years ago with an 88 OD. Tonight my wife and I went out for a ride to the Back to the Bricks in Flint MI. The Vet was runing fine, no problems untill we stopped to get something to eat. When I put the Trans, in reverse it started grinding, I got it in reverse and backed up but when I tried to put it in frist the shift lever would not budge, I could not get in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. I was able to get into 4th and had to drive home in that gear, what a ride.

I do not use the Vet that much and I get it check out every spring by a mechanic who has worked on it for years and put in the 88 OD for me.

What the heck is going on? Is it the clutch or did the 2 year old OD die already?

Thanks for the help.

Hugh

Sounds like you lost your clutch pedal hydraulics. None of the symptoms you describe have anything to do with the OD unit. Check for fluid and leaks in the clutch master and slave.

Check the fluid in the clutch master cylinder reservoir.

Some notes from the 4+3 archives
August 3, 1998

If a transmission grinds trying to go in reverse that means the transmission is still turning. Gears don't grind against each other unless they are moving.
People don't understand this simple tell tale sign that a clutch is not releasing properly. If you are in neutral with the car idling and you press down on the clutch pedal and wait 6 seconds... the transmission should not grind going into reverse.
If it grinds then it is still turning thus the clutch has not released it from the engine.

Sometimes shifting into 1st or 2nd gear before going into reverse will solve the problem. With the shifter seeming locked in place, it could also be out of adjustment.

Grinding when going into reverse could also be a worn clutch disc or the disc hanging up on the transmission input shaft. How old is the clutch?

Try bleeding the clutch hydraulics first, then adjust the shifter mechanism.

Default 4-3 problem

Thanks to all of your for the info., today the Vet was shifting fine, a little noise going into reverse but nothing like yesterday. I am not a mechanic but I am going to have mine check out the problem on Monday.

Have a great weekend!

Hydraulics are failing and the heat exposed it for you.

Look at it this way, you drove it on a hot summer day, thermo-expansion took place on the metal parts and the old dried o-rings didn't. Now you have what is called "blow by". Rather than the o-rings forcing fluid through the system, the fluid is slipping back by the plunger...

New Hydraulics are the fix.

You could do the job yourself.

The only hard part is filling the slave cylinder for bleeding purposes and hooking the push rod to the clutch pedal under the dash......

Other than those two difficulties, it is as simple as "remove bolt......"

Thanks I appreciate the help I wish I could do it myself but I can't but I am going to have my Mechanci fix it.

My experience is when I replaced the slave the master failed soon after. maybe a coinsidence. I recall I replaced both at 70K and again at 110K.
