My mechanic thinks he hears a sound that indicates my water pump bearing is suspect. I have a 94 stock LT1 (99K miles). He seems to be an honest guy, but is there any way to assure his diagnosis is correct? A few hundred bucks are at stake if I have him do it, or a lot of hours if I do it. Any advice would be appreciated. Don't want water on my Optispark.

Well since there is no belt to remove to feel the bearing, you'll have to use a stethoscope or a long screw driver, place handle to your ear & the tip on the water pump housing. Oh yeah, another thing, remove the drive belt and run engine, this will eliminate anything else that might be making a bearing noise(like a alternator, p/s pump, ect) .

Hi,
The last 2 WPs I replaced the seal was dislodged hanging on the coupler and the bearing had visibly missing *****.
You might be able to get a small offset mirror (mounted on a srewdriver handle) like a dentist uses and take a peek behind the WP.
Best of Luck,

If you have 100,000 miles on the water pump, consider yourself lucky! You have got your moneys worth out of it. Usually from 80,000 to 120,000 miles is what they last.
